If you knew the builder of these trucks also built real firefighting brush trucks, would you call “Lil Squirt” and “Silly Willy” art imitating life, or life imitating art? If you ask Jeff Cook, owner of 1st Attack Engineering, he’ll answer, “Both!”

Cook is a graduate of “Monster Truck University” and “Custom Truck College,” as well as a trained firefighter with 18 years experience. It makes for an interesting mix of experience. Shortly after graduating from Northwestern College with a tech degree, Cook went headlong into the world of monster trucks, building and driving trucks for several teams, including his own, the legendary “War Wagon”. His father, Jack Cook, is well known in the Midwest for building custom cars and trucks and Jeff spent his early days at Cook’s Body Shop in Auburn, Indiana, learning the custom car trade from a master.

Into the breach! Lil Squirt does what any good brush truck does in a wheat stubble fire–put it out as quickly as possible. With around 850 horsepower on tap, “quick” definitely applies.

After becoming a local volunteer firefighter, he put those fabrication skills to work building a brush truck for his fire company. In the process, he discovered a life’s work and founded a company, Wildfire Manufacturing. While not running the monster truck circuit, he built fire trucks. Business picked up enough that he recently left monster trucks behind to focus on fire trucks. The name of the company has recently changed to 1st Attack Engineering after nearly 10 years as Wildfire.

Silly Willy was constructed in 2002 to highlight the design and construction skills of the company. It’s built on a custom chassis and suspension and mounts a ‘52 Willy pickup cab. Lil Squirt was built in ‘05, also on a custom chassis, but with four-wheel steering. Both have a lot of “show” and are regularly seen on the show and truck Jambo circuits, as well as at firefighting conventions.

They have a “go” side, however, and it may surprise you. They are both fully functional brush trucks, mounting 1st Attack hardware, and every once in a while, they are allowed to flex their firefighting muscles. Such was the case in the fall of 2008, when they appeared at a training fire set in a wheat field. Yep, they may be “just” show trucks, but they can do the job of a brush fire truck. When asked why he would risk the expensive trucks, Cook replied, “Oh, they’ll clean up.”

Lil Squirt uses a fiberglass body to represent a ‘37 Ford truck. The chassis and underpinnings are a smaller version of what you might see on a competition monster truck. The bed and firefighting apparatus are just the same as used on production 1st Attack brush rigs, which can include the 200-gallon water tank, Honda-powered fire pump, and two -inch handlines on reels as seen here. The outward-facing jump seats, from which firefighters can safely work a fire while strapped in and protected by a rollcage, are a signature 1st Attack feature.

Silly Willy uses a ‘52 Willys pickup body on a custom, monster truck-style chassis. It’s powered by a 454 fed by a Gerardot racing-style fuel injection system, adapted for gasoline. The power feeds through a built TH 400 trans and into a New Process 205 transfer case. From there, power goes to a Dana 70 front axle from an IH application and an Eaton rear dropout-style axle used in a 1 -ton truck. Silly Willy also mounts a 1st Attack bed system with water tank, 3/4-inch hand lines, fire pump and jump seats. It also carries a chainsaw and a backpack sprayer for hot spots.

To launch its new Taurus sedan, Ford Motor(F) today embarks on a summer of bull sessions.

CEO Alan Mulally is dispatching executives to 100 cities — from Olympia, Wash., to Winston-Salem, N.C. — to build enthusiasm before Taurus hits showrooms in August.

Executives are supposed to talk up the Taurus and other new vehicles in the lineup as they visit broadcasters, newspapers and just about any other place.

Taurus’ success is critical for Ford, which can’t afford to see its new flagship flop as it walks a financial tightrope. So far, it has not asked for government loans as have General Motors and Chrysler, both in bankruptcy court.

Mulally has a personal stake in Taurus, too. He rescued the name from the dustbin and pinned it on the Five Hundred sedan to mark time until this all-new version arrived.

Though Ford denies it’s intentional, the sessions will serve the additional purpose of distancing the automaker from GM and Chrysler.

“I am sure that is still part of it,” says Alexander Edwards, president of the automotive consulting arm of Strategic Vision. “In the end, they are going to have to remove that negative imagery.”

A blitz is right out of Ford’s playbook lately. It has given 100 new Fiesta minicars to bloggers, rockers and other tastemakers to build buzz before its launch. And participants streamed Twitter tweets as they squeezed 1,446 miles out of a tank of gas to promote its new Fusion Hybrid in Washington, D.C.

This time, marketing chief Jim Farley says the blitz is all about an “opportunity to connect with customers around our new lineup.” He says Detroit’s troubles won’t come up because “more than 90%” of people know Ford stands apart from GM and Chrysler.

Ford is well-positioned now, he says, because buyers are moving down from more ostentatious brands. He noted how McDonald’s is trying to encroach on the gourmet coffee business of Starbucks. He says there’s a “change in psychology away from ‘badge’ and prestige and to mainstream products that are well executed.”

Longtime auto marketing executive Gordon Wangers says those traveling Ford executives had better choose their words carefully.

Ford escaped financial disaster by being smart and lucky, but was left with a hangover of debt, he says. “I’m not the only person I’ve heard say, ‘I’m tired of their chest pounding.’ “

What does quality, green driving, safety, and smart technology all have in common? They are the focus of every new Ford that comes out of the factory. And perhaps they are all demonstrated by Sync, a feature found on many of our new models. Sync is a revolutionary new system that pairs outside technology with your Ford. You can talk on the phone, listen to music, display pictures, all with a few simple voice commands.

Quality: As with everything built by Ford, quality is a must. When it comes to Sync, a great example is the ease of use. All commands are simply spoken inside the vehicle, and Sync will understand and respond accordingly. Want to call Bob? Just say “Call Bob” and Sync does the rest. Say “Directions”

Ford’s new Focus zetec is a splendid looking car with a tight chassis, a practical engine. The interior, too, is well designed and well put together, the only issue being the quality of some plastics used.

The new Focus has a longer wheelbase and wider track than its precursor – but as it turns out there’s plenty of room for four passengers in a car of this size. It’ll stick to the road not matter what you throw at it, yet is almost effortless to punt through peak hour traffic, such is the light steering and marvellous gearbox. Not as powerful as some hot hatches out there, driver involvement is most impressive, and whether commuting or cruising, the Focus is a wonderfully easy car to drive.

The steering wheel, while cheerless visually, has a number of buttons scattered across it, the majority of them relating to the intuitive cruise control system. Behind the wheel there is also a small audio fob, which allows you change modes, stations, tracks and volume without taking your hands from the wheel.

Packing a new Duratec 4-cylinder engine and one of the finest 5-speed manual transmissions this side of a luxury saloon, a good complement of safety features and a chassis.

The Focus Zetec is rather handsome; it’s bullish front end lends it a decisive demeanour, and it attracted a bit of attention on the street too. The angular front end has a very solid look to it, with hints of Ford’s Mondeo in there, and the headlight clusters look great with their vertically arrayed indicators. The 17-inch wheels work well with the flared wheel arches, giving the Focus a subtle ego boost when compared to its predecessor.

Ford’s Explorer America concept — a possible future vision of what Ford’s fallen SUV king could become — will be revealed to the world at the upcoming 2008 Detroit Auto Show. Ford says the forward-looking concept was designed to address the changes in the SUV market over the past 15 years, from rugged off-roaders to civilized suburban people haulers.

This is exemplified in Explorer America’s unibody construction, which limits the vehicle’s off-road ability and towing capability over the present-day Explorer. Its large wheels and mammoth grille make it appear much tougher than it actually is. It lacks a B-pillar and the rear doors slide back like they would in a minivan — interesting stuff, although neither detail would likely to make it to production if the Explorer America got that far.

The rear glass wraps around the D-pillars, increasing visibility and the amount of light that enters the three-row, six-person vehicle. The interior is similar to most recent Ford concepts, with a futuristic minimalism theme employed. Access to the third row is enabled by stackable, sliding seats, a work table and seats built into the tailgate. A 3-D compass and navigation unit complete with a topographical map is built into the instrument panel.

The concept is also a demonstration platform of sorts for Ford’s new EcoBoost family of engines. Formerly known as TwinForce (and seen at last year’s Detroit show in the Lincoln MKR Concept), the EcoBoost engines provide the power of larger engines while achieving 20-30 percent gains in fuel-economy, according to the automaker. Initially, this family will consist of a 2.0-liter inline-four making 275 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5-liter V-6 expected to make some 340 horsepower and over 340 lb-ft of torque.

The EcoBoost engines use a combination of direct-injection and turbocharging to provide the power of a larger engine (Ford likens the turbo-four to a V-6 and the turbo-six of a V-8). Today, the Explorer is powered by an aging 4.0-liter V-6 that makes 210 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque and a 4.6-liter V-8 that makes just 292 horsepower and 300 lb-ft — meager numbers in the age of 270 horsepower Camrys and Accords.
Mated to the EcoBoost engine in the Explorer America is an advanced six-speed automatic transmission that allows the driver to select and hold a gear with the turn of a dial via a feature called auto shift control. The concept also features electric power steering; a feature that Ford says will be standard equipment on 80-90 percent of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles by 2012. As for EcoBoost, it remains on track to be launched in the 2009 Lincoln MKS. Ford hopes to have half a million EcoBoost-powered vehicles on the road by 2013.

The suicide doors are gone and the front has been opened up a bit to allow the engine to breathe… but Ford’s execution from concept to production is, for the most part, dead-on. Ford recently gave us the opportunity to drive the new Flex in Southern California, so follow the jump to read our first impressions of the Blue Oval’s new people mover.

A simple two-box design, the Flex borrows styling cues from the MINI Cooper, Honda Element, and Scion xB. Refining the shape, Ford designers have sculpted four horizontal grooves running lengthwise into the side door panels. Making this Ford both unique and interesting, the design element visually stretches the vehicle and emphasizes its long wheelbase (hint: cargo capacity and smooth ride). The roof is also separated from the body by an all-black greenhouse (a first for Ford). Standard tinted glass on all rear windows emphasizes what Ford calls “…mystery and intrigue in the design” while chrome and bright metallic accents highlight the rear liftgate, door handles, trim, and mirrors. The face of the Flex features Ford’s three-bar grille, with headlights and fog lamps following the common theme with their bright surrounds.

In a deliberately non-minivan style, two front-hinged passenger doors open wide on each side, while a power-operated tailgate takes up the rear. The bottom of the doors merit notice as the rocker sills have been integrated in the door itself. This innovative feature allows passengers to step several inches closer to the Flex when climbing in or out, and they take dirt and grime away with the swinging door (while it never rains in Southern California, this will be a boon in most normal climates). Making pumping gas a bit simpler, especially with a gloved hand, the Flex introduces a “capless” fuel system called Easy Fuel. Ford wanted us to try the rather simple system (it involves a gasket on the filler door) but we don’t get pleasure out of pumping gas-even on someone else’s dime.

Inside, this top-of-the-line Limited model had roomy seating for six (drop the optional 5-qt. fridge/freezer with its own built-in compressor, and you can put a third passenger in the middle row). Concentrating on interior quality, Ford utilized multiple materials, textures, and colors within the cabin. While it is upscale (kudos to the contrasting stitches on the leather) and very inviting, the high-gloss acrylic coating on the “wood grain” is just too plastic for our tastes. The primary gauges are easy to read, but the myriad of buttons on the center stack will have you pulling your eyes from the road to hit them, even long after you are accustomed to the panel.

As vehicles become more technology-laden than a 757 passenger jetliner, the Flex follows the trend with Ford’s popular SYNC with next-generation navigation and Sirius Travel Link. Navigation, weather, movies and even current gasoline prices are displayed on the 8-inch touchscreen within easy reach from the front seats. We cannot fathom why Ford included the too-low-to-be-useful analog clock on the center cluster (does anyone remember the Infiniti QX56?).

Even with power-adjustable pedals, the driving position for our six-foot two-inch frame wasn’t optimal. The steering column adjusts for rake, but does not telescope. To get the legroom we needed, our arms were forced awkwardly outstretched. The headrests, oversized to limit head and neck injury in a crash, rested uncomfortably close to our heads even after we tweaked them. The firm and wide front seats, however, were very comfortable and leg room was accommodating. Second row passengers (Ford calls it “Business-class”) have a generous amount of room keeping all but the worst misfit kids from kicking the back of the front seats. Adults will occupy the third row without protest, and still remain on speaking terms with the others. With above-average legroom, and skylights overhead in our Limited model, it is far from claustrophobic sitting in the “way-back.” Ford thoughtfully placed a button on the interior B-pillar that springs the second-row seat up and out-of-the-way for easy third-row ingress/egress, and it really works.

There are three different Flex models: SE, SEL, and Limited. All share identical mechanicals, with the exception of front- or all-wheel drive drivelines. Ford brought more than a dozen Flexes (Flexi?) to Southern California for us to peruse, but all of them were the top-of-the-line Limited AWD models. With a twist of the conventional key, the engine cranked over and we headed out of Santa Monica for the Pacific Coast Highway and the twisty Mulholland Drive above it. It is immediately obvious that Ford engineers did an impressive job keeping the enemy – weight and torque steer – at bay. Had we not been told the Limited model we were driving tipped the scales at about 4,400 pounds, and was sending all of the engine’s power through the front wheels, we would never have guessed.

While the Flex isn’t going to be the car of choice for your next autocross (if pushed, it plows), the tuning of the four-wheel independent suspension kept body roll to a minimum, and driver confidence in sweeping corners high. As mentioned, the model we tested was equipped with permanent all-wheel drive. Under normal conditions, all of the torque goes to the front wheels. However, if the system detects slip or conditions that warrant otherwise (e.g., hard acceleration from a standstill), power is immediately sent rearward. The AWD system in the Ford Flex can send 100 percent the engine’s power to the axle that needs it the most – automatically.

As the price of fuel continues to go nuts, it is worth first mentioning the efficiency of this new Ford. Painstaking engine tuning and near-complete fuel cutoff during deceleration help the new Flex earn impressive fuel economy ratings of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway (16/22 in AWD trim). That trumps all of the 7-passenger full-size SUVs (even the Hybrid GMC Yukon), popular minivans and many crossovers of varying size. We should add that the Flex is designed to sip regular unleaded fuel, as well.

With fuel economy taking precedent over brute power (ergo no V8), the Ford Flex features the familiar Duratec 3.5-liter V6 rated at 262 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that is designed to pull away in first gear, the Flex easily moves itself around without hesitation. Only in the canyons did we find ourselves getting a bit frustrated with the transmission’s electronic brain. The slushbox wanted to save fuel. We wanted torque. The Ford guy in the back seat (no, your car will not come with one) suggested we hit the “O/D” button. Designed for use while towing, it locks out sixth, holds gears longer, and will downshift automatically on braking. With a quick stab of that little button on the side of the shifter, we got what we were looking for.

Isolating passengers from unnecessary noise was also a key design goal of the Ford team. To achieve the goal, the front windshield (and all side glass panels on upscale models) is acoustically laminated to cut down on wind roar. A relatively low drag coefficient (.355, to be precise) and foam injected pillars and panels also keep the noise away from the passenger’s ears. During our stint behind the wheel, we found the Flex to be notably quiet. Even our pre-production model was free of the expected squeaks and rattles. We spent about four stress-free hours inside the Flex’s cabin. With the optional DVD entertainment center and Sony 7.1 surround system, and a stocked fridge, this could be the ultimate road-trip vehicle.

It seems Ford’s objective was to deliver a stylish alternative to the boring minivan, and one-up the cookie-cutter competition. In doing so, it has also created an excuse to drop the gas-thirsty full-size SUV in exchange for an innovative, impressively fuel efficient, 7-passenger crossover. Whatever the case, with the precision of a GPS-guided projectile, Ford appears to have hit its target.

Delivering towing capability of 11,300 lbs. across all cab configurations, a payload of 3,030 lbs., and an 8-percent increase in fuel economy, the new 2009 Ford F-150 continues a strong contender in the full-size pickup market. Work Truck had a chance to “torture-test” the new model and experience its off-roading power.

Lighter and Leaner Body Increases Fuel Economy

The 2009 Ford F-150’s fully boxed frame is constructed from hydroformed high-strength steel side rails for increased durability and safety, which also contributes up to a 100-lb. weight reduction versus the current model.

Aerodynamic refinements and the use of lightweight ultra high-strength steel results in an 8-percent improvement in fuel economy across the entire V-8 F-150 lineup.

The F-150 also regulates gas consumption by using aggressive deceleration automatic fuel shut-off, requiring no extra action from the driver. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the system temporarily turns off the fuel. When the truck reaches a low speed or the driver accelerates again, the flow of fuel resumes.

Ford will also introduce the new F-150 SFE “superior fuel economy” edition delivering up to 21 mpg highway (15 mpg city) while still providing 7,500 lbs. of towing capability. The new SFE package will be available on F-150 SuperCrew XL and XLT 4×2 vehicles with 4.6L, 3-valve V-8 engines and 5.5-foot beds.

Cargo Capacity Maximized with New Interior

In addition to better fuel economy and increased durability, a new 6-inch stretch improves the F-150’s previous rear seat legroom and cargo capacity, providing more usable space for transporting people and gear.

The mechanically articulated second-row seat makes it easier to load and unload items from the rear seating area, flipping up and folding against the back of the cab by simply pushing up on the seat bottom, a move easily done with one hand.

The flat load floor and fold-up rear seat maximize cargo space, with the capacity to store and secure items up to 47.9 inches tall. Total cargo space behind the front seats is a class-leading 57.6 cubic feet. Fleets can load items the size of a large-screen, flat-panel television monitor (as demonstrated by Ford) into the vehicle with little difficulty.

Standard Features Put Safety First

With a durable body frame, the 2009 F-150 is built to withstand nearly any scenario on and off the road. Ford puts safety first with a number of standard safety features, including:

■ AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control.

■ Anti-lock braking system.

■ Safety canopy side curtain airbags with roll-fold technology for enhanced head protection in roll-overs and side impacts.

■ Front seat-mounted side airbags.

■ Personal safety system.

■ New seats and restraints.

A new brake booster and master cylinder also offer a better pedal feel.

Aside from lightening the pickup’s body, the F-150’s all-new lightweight hydroformed steel body structure is also engineered to earn a top safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Focus retail sales were up 88 percent in April versus the prior year, and a growing number of younger customers have been buying the new Focus model that was launched in late 2007.

“We’ve spent a lot of time talking with small-car customers and Focus enthusiasts,” said Sam De La Garza, Focus marketing manager. “Their overwhelming feedback was that a sportier exterior design could attract even more Millennials, or those people born between 1980 and 1995 – 11,000 of whom reach driving age every day in the U.S.”

With that in mind, the Focus team sculpted the coupe’s new front and rear fascias to provide a sportier appearance. The lower front fascia incorporates a larger open area that bares a strong resemblance to the acclaimed design of the new global Ford Fiesta subcompact. The fog lamps – now standard – are better integrated into the overall design of the front fascia, and its signature two-bar chrome front grille and chrome accents around the headlamps have been darkened for added differentiation.

For differentiation, the high-end Focus SES will feature a standard high-mounted spoiler that is incorporated into the design of the roof. The high-mounted design contributes to Focus’ overall muscular stance. A decklid spoiler will remain part of the Focus SE exterior design.

Ford has unveiled a SmartGauge dashboard system, which it says will help drivers improve their fuel economy by alerting them when they’re practicing good driving habits. The system will basically provide feedback to the driver, with different levels of information available, ranging from the basic “Journey” mode to the more detailed “Empower.” The screen will display graphics that gauge engine performance and fuel efficiency, giving drivers more information that will help them stretch every gallon of gas even farther. One of the issues Ford has had to deal with in developing the system is driver distraction. In earlier versions, the screen became too cluttered and required more of the driver’s attention to read than was safe. Designers solved this by moving to a “leaf-based” readout. The screen displays more green leaves when the driver is saving fuel, making it easy to distinguish between fuel-wasteful and fuel-efficient driving. Don’t believe us? Check out more images below. The system will debut in two Ford hybrids, the 2010 Ford Fusion and 2010 Mercury Milan hybrids, which we wrote about earlier today. Realgauge Gaugeleaves

Using the mantra “One Ford,” the company says it will build just one global midsize sedan, unifying the American Ford Fusion and European Ford Mondeo in the next five years. We’re hoping the Mondeo (shown above) wins out. That would make sense, as it is considerably smaller than the Ford Taurus.

In less mass-market news, Ford also says it will consolidate its cargo vans. Say goodbye to the E-Series as you know it and hello to something better able to meet future government fuel-efficiency rulings, like the Transit (shown above), not to be confused with the smaller Transit Connect already announced as a 2010 U.S. model.

For those interested, there was also a slew of news about fuel-saving technology that’s intended to be phased in throughout Ford’s lineup by 2012. Again, this sounds like a move to meet new CAFE standards.

Ford says it will introduce a six-speed automatic transmission with PowerShift that will rival the mileage ratings manual transmissions manage. Things like start-stop engines that shut off when cars come to a stop to conserve fuel, electric power steering and direct injection will be added.

Ford says its EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engines will be introduced in North America for 2010 as well. The V-6 turbo engines are intended to be introduced in calendar year 2009 in the Lincoln MKS, Ford Flex and redesigned Ford Taurus.

Ford has promised that the Mercury brand will live on in a way that sets the marque apart from it’s Blue Oval-badged siblings. Many Autoblog readers have commented that Ford should utilize its European models to meet this end, and all indications are that you were right on. Ford has said that the next all-new Mercury would come in 2010, and Ford of Europe CEO John Fleming told Automotive News that the vehicle will “likely” be designed and engineered in Europe. The reason for Mr. Fleming’s confidence comes from the fact that the new vehicle will be based on the Ford Focus platform, and that vehicle architecture will, for the foreseeable future, be developed overseas.

Ford of Europe currently builds the C-Max, the three-, four-, and five-door Focus and the Kuga off the C-platform, meaning any one of those variants could one day wear a Mercury waterfall grille. While it would essentially still be a rebadged Ford, this new Merc will be a slightly reworked version of a vehicle that won’t otherwise be sold stateside, so it will be new to us. That sounds a lot better than the Mercurys we have today.

It shines, it glitters, it energizes and allures. In fact, the importance and psychology of color is unmistakable, even in the automotive realm.

“It’s critical,” says Susan Sage, Color and Materials design manager, at Ford Motor Company. “Color creates an aesthetic emotion. If it’s a color that the customer loves, if it gives them that sense of balance and comfort, they’ll want it. It can make or break a sale.”

Determining the color palette for a vehicle is no simple process, she says. It’s a collaborative effort among designers intent on creating a harmonious interior and exterior color package that will appeal to customers and enhance the architecture and design cues of the vehicle itself.

For the 2009 Lincoln MKS, for instance, the message was luxury, and its color palette – with a mixture of metallics, tri-coats, rich tones and neutrals – articulates that clearly.

The MKS is available in Tuxedo Black Metallic, White Suede, Brilliant Silver Metallic, Sangria, Smokestone, Light Ice Blue, Dark Ink Blue, Cinnamon and White Chocolate. A selection of interior colors has been chosen to specifically complement each tone.

“The MKS has beautiful lines,” Sage says. “The colors we chose had a lot to do with architecture. Using a premium paint for our premium cars is to enhance the exterior architecture of the car by giving it a luxurious ‘liquid’ look.”

The colors chosen for the MKS – both interior and exterior – denote quality and luxury, she says.

“The one thing we were really excited about was this was the first year we were able to have a black metallic that really enhances the form,” Sage says. “You’ll see in the color palette and in the paints that we’ve enhanced them by using different type of flakes.”

The importance of color can’t be overstated, agrees Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and author of six books on the topic. In fact, in “The Color Answer Book,” Eiseman specifically addresses the significance of color and cars.

“Color and emotion are tied in together, and buying a car is a very emotional thing for a lot of people,” she said. “A car is really an extension of your personality, an extension of who you are and how you want to be perceived.”

Color is powerful, sometimes changing how others see you, she says.

“I had a client who was very successful in the insurance industry,” she recalls. “He was kind of a gray guy; he drove a very practical car and was very reserved. The first thing he did when he retired was buy a red sports car.”

“To him that car represented a change of lifestyle. It was colorful, sexy. It was fun to drive,” she added. “He was happy in that car. He said, ‘This is how I want people to perceive me – as a dynamic person.’”

While a plethora of factors play into the purchase of a car, she says, color certainly has an impact.

“People might think, ‘Oh, it’s so shallow of me,’ so they won’t acknowledge it,” Eiseman says. But I’ve had people tell me, ‘Yes, it’s very important.’”

For the palette of Lincoln’s flagship MKS, the design team looked not only at the lines of the vehicle, but at trends in architecture, fashion, home furnishings and in the evolution of luxury standards in the U.S.

“We have to look at where the industry is moving, what’s doing well, and how it evolves,” says Sage, who is also an artist in her own right. “You have to take a holistic approach to design, to look inside and out.”

“As a painter and a sculptor, I understand when color is applied to form, what works and what doesn’t. You know when it’s right. It has to be harmonious. It has to sing. You have to put a product out there that people know just feels right,” she says. “Maybe they don’t even know why they love it – they just know that it makes them feel good.”

Color splash

The color of a car speaks volumes, Eiseman says. While there are a wealth of different shades that must be considered, here are some basic messages each color conveys:

Black: Empowered; not easily manipulated. Loves elegance, appreciates the classics.

White: Fastidious

Deep Blue-Red: Some of the same qualities of vibrant red – sexy, speedy, high-energy and dynamic – but far less obvious about it.

Light to Mid-Blue: Cool, calm, quiet.

Dark blue: Credible, confident and dependable.

Silver: Elegant, futuristic, cool.

Boasting just 300 horsepower but weighing in at 6104 pounds, the 2008 Ford Expedition seemed a lock to be a total slug. But thanks to a six-speed automatic, 365 pound-feet of torque, and four-wheel vented disc brakes, the Ford hustles to 60 and back to zero. Nevertheless, even with 20-inch wheels wearing 55-series Pirellis, the Expedition was unable to cheat the laws of physics, at least in a curved line, posting a slow figure-eight time (31.0 seconds) and low lateral acceleration (0.68 g).

Out on the twisty roads through Kennedy Meadows, the Expedition’s moves supported these numbers, its soft suspension responding with plenty of roll and dive. And squat? Not enough oomph for that. “Feels sluggish right out of the gate,” opines Truck Trend’s editor-in-chief Mark Williams. “You can tell there’s a lot of weight here, and the engine doesn’t seem interested in compensating.” Sure, there are six speeds, but without a true manual mode, the tranny hunts with the same fervor as Dick Cheney.”

Still, the Ford handles well for such a big girl. Says editor-at-large Arthur St. Antoine, “Although it rolls into corners, it doesn’t plow like a tractor — it hangs on impressively and even shrugs off mid-corner undulations that can set the other rigs heaving up and down.” The steering, while heavy in feel and slow on turn-in, did deliver linear response, and the brakes felt strong and a match for the cumbersome curb weight. Off road, the Expedition handled the snow with aplomb. “This is where the massive weight helps push the tires to the ground for grip,” claims Williams. Senior editor Ed Loh adds, “It’s reassuring over snowy roads-no slipping, no sliding.”

Inside our King Ranch tester, every editor was impressed by the luxurious “Chaparral” leather, the ultraquiet ambiance, the rearview mirror with integrated backup video screen, and the capacious cabin, the last trumping the others’ third-row headroom and legroom. For transporting Eddie and the entire Bauer clan, the Expedition is tough to beat. Plus, the third row comes with a powerfolding feature, alleviating any back-breaking exercises, and the second row boasts a useful “Cargo Mode,” which lays the middle row flat with the pull of a lever.

From the driver’s seat, though, the view is somewhat disappointing. The instrument panel, with its mix of round and rectangular gauges and chrome, plastic, and wood trim, appears retro for the sake of being retro and at the expense of good function. But with its roomy interior, clever packaging, and commendable offroad performance, not to mention being the only one with cooled front seats and power runningboards, the Ford presents a strong package overall.

Hip-hop DJ’s expertly built SUV commands attention on the road

Cruising to Cleveland requires a good stereo, a solid ride and the constitution to stay awake no matter how flat the Interstate.

This road trip had two objectives: Test the 2008 Ford Expedition designed by Funkmaster Flex and watch Madonna drop the F-Bomb during her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Flex, the 39-year-old hip-hop DJ with more gearhead cred than Mr. Goodwrench, has had an ongoing relationship with Ford Motor Co. to design and build concept vehicles. But the Flexpedition, as most call the limited-edition model, is the real deal and is rolling off the production line.

His mission was to spin a hulking SUV into an urban rider. Flex did more than transform an Expedition Limited model into the FMF Expedition; he tapped into a customer base that Ford doesn’t always reach: young people. Its two-tone exterior and 20-inch wheels will turn heads whether it’s pulling out of a suburban garage or parked outside a city cafe.

Ford built 650 Flexpeditions at Wayne’s Michigan Truck plant but has not said whether it will produce more. All of the models are on sale at Ford dealerships. Now, if you have an aversion to big SUVs or Michigan’s own Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone Ritchie (you can see why she uses just one name), just stop reading and go e-mail some friends on the goodness of cloth shopping bags and Credence Clearwater Revival. You’ll have no interest in the dozen Madonna song references from here to the end.

The Flexpedition is a lot like Madonna: unrepentant. It makes no apologies for its size, its fuel consumption, its roomy interior or the commotion it causes wherever it rolls. It’s a material world, baby — get over yourself, and, while you’re at it, get out of the way.

Color makes a statement

Driving my $49,000 test vehicle (the starting MSRP is $40,910, including $900 shipping) to Cleveland, I watched lots of people move out of the way. The Flexpedition’s intimidating mammoth red grille looks like a solar eclipse from any rearview mirror in a car. The overall size of any Expedition is impressive: 206.5-inches long, 77.2-inches tall, 91.8-inches wide (including the mirrors).

The Colorado Red body — the same red found on Mustangs — with black roof and hood stripes makes a statement. And the people who noticed it — the ones who sped up next to me as though I were a beautiful stranger to present a thumbs up or roll down their window to ask what I’m driving — all were under 30, a group every carmaker wants to reach. They’re hip, they’re cool, they’re the kind of people who would never hang out with me. They were in kindergarten when “Like A Virgin” hit the charts in 1984.

The first difference between a regular Expedition and the Flexpedition is the 3dCarbon body kit installed around the base of Flex’s model. It creates a low-riding effect on the SUV and accents the 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. The flashy FMF badge on the fenders is usually the second thing people notice. The unusual color mix and subtle changes made people unsure of what I was driving. In parking lots around Detroit, people would ask, “Hey, what is that?”

The one element Flex left alone was the 5.4-liter V-8 under the bulging red hood. There was no need. The 300-horsepower engine provides plenty of pep. Cruising at 80 mph is a cinch; in Ohio, though, I’d suggest cruise control be set it at 62.5 mph (state troopers turn their heads to watch the Flexpedition too). The six-speed automatic transmission is smooth, giving the SUV an easy ride. The tranny also helps it reach 18 mpg on the highway.

Keeping the speed down, I managed 19 mpg on my trip back from Cleveland. With city driving, the EPA says to expect 12 mpg; expect less with fun, hard driving. Those are certainly not Earth Day friendly figures, but last I checked, an SUV is still legal to own.

Attitude can’t be beat

The ride is smooth, clean and quiet. Like all Expeditions, the FMF Expedition is built on a fully boxed frame and includes an independent front suspension and five-link independent rear suspension. For a vehicle with a 119-inch wheelbase and a curb weight of 5,548 pounds, the Flexpedition is well-mannered.

The power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering can feel a little light at highway speeds, but it never feels uncomfortably loose and remains well-balanced. Driving in rush hour traffic in downtown Cleveland, I never had a problem maneuvering. The SUV’s size may make it cumbersome to park, but it’s great for long hauls on big family vacations. Additionally, the big engine means the two-wheel drive FMF Expedition can tow 9,200 pounds, thanks to its 365 pound-feet of torque. It’s capable; it’s strong and lets you express yourself in style.

While Flex’s exterior design attracts attention, his interior work is what makes this SUV a keeper, with more splashes of red than a CSI: Miami crime scene involving power tools.

The red stitching on the black leather seats pops. The FMF winged logos on the head rests look classic. The red center stack, which includes a dash plaque to tell you which numbered edition your SUV is, adds a touch of individuality (though I wish the plaque opened up to provide storage under it). Other interior additions include second-row captain chairs, PowerFold third-row seats, heated and cooled front seats, specialized floor mats and a 340-watt stereo. All are standard on the Flexpedition.

The stereo, which includes an auxiliary jack for a personal music player, cranks, making the rearview mirror vibrate with every beat if you’re really into the groove. Every seat is comfortable and roomy and each row provides more leg room and space. The third row offers 37.7 inches of leg room — more than half a foot more than the average coach class airline seat. The second-row captain chairs have 39.1 inches and the front seats have 41.1 inches, providing yet another example of driving being more comfortable than flying.

But the regular Expedition offers just as much space for less money. So why consider the Flexpedition?

It’s a matter of attitude. There is no big SUV on the road that comes with the attitude of this red and black bomber. It’s not a hip-hop mobile or a cheap impersonation of the celebrity endorsing it. It’s muscle and prestige, a sanctuary in chaotic traffic, a reflection of the man who designed it and a representation of the ideal American life for the person who buys it.

It’s not your typical SUV — it’s a little star and it may not end up in any hall of fame, but it headlines wherever it goes.

The Expedition came in handy for driving a crew of six to dinner. The four 20-somethings among the group were most impressed with the power-folding seats and the automatically retracting running boards. And other drivers are less likely to cut you off while driving this big dog.

The Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV built by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced in 1997 it slots between the smaller Ford Explorer, and the now discontinued and larger Ford Excursion. The Expedition offers up to eight passenger seating and a range of V8 engines. It is similar to the Lincoln Navigator, especially for the 2004 model with the introduction of the Limited trim line. One million Expeditions have sold since 2004, reflecting high consumer demand for its family-friendly interior, cargo space, and high towing capacity. A specially modified Special Service Vehicle version is also available from Ford for law enforcement and fire departments. All Expeditions are built in Wayne, Michigan. This SUV (especially the larger EL/Max model for 2007) is once again Ford’s flagship SUV.

1997-2002

The Expedition was designed to compete with both the larger Chevrolet Suburban, and the smaller Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, as well as the Toyota Land Cruiser. It replaced the full-size Ford Bronco. Seating capacity ranged up to eight passengers with the third-row rear seat option, and the Expedition could tow 8,000 lb (3,600 kg). Ford made changes for the 1999 Expedition. Both the 4.6L and 5.4L engines got more power without lowering the mpg. It also got a new grille, front fascia, and bumper with incorporated fog lamps in the lower valence.

2003-2006

The 2003 Expedition shared the Ford U platform for 8,300 lb (3,800 kg) towing. The rear axle and suspension was changed to an independent suspension configuration giving and a more refined ride. Popular new features included power folding third-row seats and turn-signal mirror lights.

The base 4.6 L V8 engine was dropped in 2005 as the 5.4 L V8 was updated with 24-valve technology.

AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™ is optional for 2005.

The Expedition uses the code U1 in the 5th and 6th positions of the VIN.

Engines:

* 2003-2005 4.6 L V8, 232 hp (173 kW)
* 2003-2005 5.4 L V8, 260 hp (194 kW)
* 2005-2006 5.4 L 24-valve V8, 300 hp (223 kW)

2007

For 2007, the Expedition was redesigned, utilizing the new T1 platform. The new platform provides 10% more torsional rigidity than the previous model, and includes the independent rear suspension. As in previous years, the Expedition is powered by the 5.4 L Triton V8 engine, rated at 300 hp (220 kW) and 365 lbf·ft (495 N·m) of torque, which when properly equipped can tow up to 9,100 lb (4,130 kg). In addition, a 4.6 L V8 gas-electric hybrid, rated the same for both power and torque as the 5.4 L may be available in future years and/or a 4.4 L V8 diesel engine, based off the Ford Lion V6 engine with estimates of 330 bhp (246 kW) and 515 ft·lbf (700 Nm) of torque respectively. The 2007 Expedition was unveiled at the Houston Auto Show rather than at Detroit, Los Angeles, or New York where most new models are, as 20% of all Expedition sales are in Texas. The third generation Expedition went on sale in August 2006. The first 2007 Expedition to roll off a Ford assembly line was donated by Ford to the Peter family of Jamaica, Queens, New York as part of an episode of the ABC series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition that aired May 7, 2006.

example, Expedition’s seats have been redesigned from the floor up with improved contours, larger bolsters, softer cushions and upgraded materials to provide increased comfort on long trips.

“Like we’ve done for F-Series, we have aimed with Expedition to set a new standard for interior refinement for full-size. “Expedition’s all-new interior is as comfortable as your favorite pair of jeans.” Improvements in quality, comfort and capability are evident throughout Expedition’s interior. Each trim level features a distinctive, bold, modern look.

Expedition XLT defines tough luxury. The technical grain of the deep gray dashboard contrasts nicely with the elegantly embossed cloth seat inserts and warm steel trim. Two Eddie Bauer options combine rich, warm-gray first- and second-row leather-trimmed seats with a choice of camel or stone accents. Expedition Limited is a statement in monochromatic rich gray or charcoal black luxury. Available caramel-colored leather seat inserts bring out the richness of the mahogany wood accents. Heated and cooled front seats are available.

The Ford Falcon is manufactured by Ford Australia since 1960. Since the 1972 model, the Falcon has been designed, developed and built in Australia. However prior to 1972, all models were re-engineered.
The Falcon is one of the biggest selling names in world automotive history, remains Ford’s most popular model in Australia. Competition has mainly come from arch-rival Holden, but Mitsubishi Motors, and Toyota have also played a role in competition.

Ford has manufactured over three million units since 1960, and has topped the sales charts in Australia on many occasions. Currently the Falcon lineup is offered in sedan, station wagon, and utility body styles, however in the past panel vans and hardtops were offered.

Station wagons, as well as the closely related Ford Fairlane and LTD limousines, sport a longer wheelbase than the mainstream Falcon.
For this reason they are sometimes rebuilt for uses such as stretch limousines and hearses.
Falcon exports have traditionally been confined to right-hand-drive countries in the Asia-Pacific region, such as New Zealand (who sometimes devised local trim models, such as the Falcon 600), and Pacific Island nations like Papua New Guinea and Fiji.
Ford’s assembly plant at Wiri, Auckland in the early 1990s, all Falcons sold in New Zealand have been fully imported from Australia.
The only significant export market for the Falcon outside of Oceania has been South Africa, where it was released in 1996 after an absence of nearly 20 years, but was dropped in 2003. The pinnacle of Falcon performance, the Falcon XR8 with its Boss 260 will make your heart race with its world-class optional automatic transmission and incredible driving dynamics.
Key Features
Falcon falcon XR8 features plus/or:
· Boss 260 – 5.4L DOHC V8 4V engine
· 260kW of power @ 5250rpm and 500Nm of torque @ 4000rpm1
· 6-speed manual transmission
· Dynamic Stability Control incorporating Traction Control functionality
· Limited slip differential
· Performance brakes
· 18″ alloy wheels (set of four)
· Prestige audio system with LCD display screen and 6-disc in-dash CD
Optional Features^
· ZF 6-speed automatic transmission with Sequential Sports Shift

• Design adds cues from best-selling Ford F-Series. New interior features, improved craftsmanship and impressive quietness.
• All-new chassis provides solid foundation and increased capability.
• Standard side airbags, three-row Safety Canopy system.

Ford Expedition sets a new benchmark once again this year, offering the kind of capability for hauling people and cargo that can only come from a full-size SUV. The new Ford Expedition and all-new Expedition EL extended length model deliver a fresh design and best-ever capability and comfort developed specifically for those core SUV customers, while building on the tradition of excellence as a leader among the full-size AUV segment with unmatched, class-exclusive or first-in-class features.

Expedition’s new design, inspired by the best-selling Ford F-Series truck, signals big improvements in capability, functionality and toughness. And new levels of interior refinement, flexibility and quietness change the game in Expedition’s favor among discriminating full-size SUV customers.

Full-size SUV buyers are, may be, the most demanding customers of all. They want uncompromised capability and unquestioned toughness, along with interior flexibility and refinement. The new Expedition has been designed with unique customer appeal that makes it stand out in a competitive market.

Comfortable and Capable on the Inside:

The new Expedition delivers a new level of interior comfort, refinement and quality. For example, Expedition’s seats have been redesigned from the floor up with improved contours, larger bolsters, softer cushions and upgraded materials to provide increased comfort on long trips.

Improved Road-Cruising Quietness :
Expedition engineers set aggressive targets for reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Normal conversation is easily discernible from the front row all the way to the third-row seat, thanks to improved sound-deadening materials in the carpet and headliner, increased insulation behind the dashboard and door panels, thicker side glass and a specially engineered acoustical windshield – all designed to help reduce interior noise. And it doesn’t stop there.

Bigger, softer body mounts and improved engine and transmission mounts isolate the cabin from unwanted vibration. Wind tunnel-tuned-and-tested outside mirrors further reduce wind and road noise. Even Expedition’s tires have been specifically tuned to reduce road noise.

1. That fender bender will be a major expense. If the accident is your fault and you have the typical $500 deductible for a collision, kiss your money goodbye. A survey of repair shops in the Washington, D.C., area by Consumers’ Checkbook, a nonprofit consumer information group, shows that replacing a fender on a 1998 Buick LeSabre can cost as much as $982. A new front bumper on a 2006 Mercedes-Benz E-Class can go as high as $1,350.

2. Approved shops are beholden to tightfisted insurers. Auto insurers contract with providers to repair vehicles for a pre-negotiated rate (think of it as managed care for sick cars). And your car could be the victim of cost cutting. Some practices, such as requiring low hourly labor rates and making the shop pick up the rental car tab if a repair takes too long, could tempt shops to cut corners — by, say, neglecting to align the wheels or using plastic filler in a dent rather than replacing the sheet metal. “Insurers have wired the shops to give them so many discounts that, to stay alive, the shops often do the bare minimum,” says Erica Eversman, of Vehicle Information Services, which provides consulting and forensic experts for both insurers and consumers. For a list of independent shops that meet certain quality criteria, go to Assured Performance Collision Care.

3. Not all replacement parts are created equal. Original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts are designed to match precisely and may be safer. But insurers prefer that shops use generic or salvage replacement parts because they’re cheaper. If you cause an accident, you could be bound by wording in your policy to use aftermarket parts or pay the difference for OEM parts. But if someone hits you, tell the shop to use OEM parts.

4. The due date is most likely fiction. Mechanics routinely blame missed deadlines on delays in parts delivery. The truth is that many of them take on more business than they can handle. Before you commit your business to a shop, check the local Better Business Bureau and government consumer-affairs offices for complaints against it.

5. A rented car will cost you. Renting a car for three weeks could cost $1,000 or more. Even if you have optional rental-car insurance (which costs $1 or $2 a month), your daily reimbursement may be limited to the cost of a compact car. If you need a minivan while your car is in the shop, make sure you have minivan-size coverage.

6. Your car needs a shop that speaks its language. Many European cars use aluminum and ultrahard steel that require special equipment to repair. Plus, replacement parts for late-model European vehicles have to be fit with an especially high degree of precision. Shops should be certified by the manufacturer to do the work, meaning they must have specialized training and equipment — and charge higher rates. Insurers won’t necessarily recommend these shops, but they should be willing to pay the tab.

7. The insurer’s warranty isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Insurers sometimes dangle warranties on the parts (for as long as you own the vehicle) to entice you to go to shops in their network. But the body shop’s guarantee is the one that’s important. Nearly all shops will guarantee their work, and parts makers guarantee their parts, making the insurance warranty all but worthless.

The Ford Expedition EL is a longer bodied version of the regular Expedition. When it’s equipped with four-wheel drive, the Expedition EL will also get you there whether the road is dry, wet, snowy, or even when there’s hardly any road at all.

The Expedition EL adds more cargo-carrying capacity with a longer 131-inch wheelbase. It is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5.4-liter V-8 that is rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A new, six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. It is available with either rear-wheel drive or electronically engaged four-wheel drive. A Class III trailer hitch is standard. The Expedition EL offers towing capacities in the 9000-pound range.

Ford has made the Expedition even more family-friendly by substantially reducing its price. Ford tells us that Expedition models across the range have been reduced in price by an average of $4300. Just as important, a new warranty extends bumper-to-bumper protection to three years/36,000 miles, while the powertain is covered for five years/60,000 miles. In addition, the warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners.

Ford Expedition comes in two different sizes, the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the new Expedition EL with its 131-inch wheelbase. Every Expedition is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5.4-liter V-8 that is rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A new, six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. Every Expedition model is available with either rear-wheel drive (2WD) or electronically engaged four-wheel drive (4WD). A Class III trailer hitch is standard.

Safety equipment includes front-seat frontal and side-impact air bags, three-row head-protection curtain air bags, anti-lock braking (ABS), and electronic stability control with anti-rollover technology.

The Ford Expedition is a truck and, unlike so many other full-size sport-utilities, it doesn’t pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because Ford trucks continue to have an outstanding reputation for utility, reliability and durability, perhaps a byproduct of the extraordinarily rigorous testing they undergo at Ford’s brutal truck proving ground in Arizona.

Both the long and regular-length versions of the Expedition are based on the tough, durable components of the Ford F-150 pickup. However, the Expedition features independent rear suspension, chassis technology that improves driving precision, ride comfort, and even passenger packaging.

Fuel prices have chased lots of people away from full-size sport-utilities, but all the vehicles in this class now offer a surprising amount of car-like refinement in addition to the customary utility. Even in this group, the 2007 Ford Expedition stands apart because it not only offers the best overall utility package but also delivers superior performance in virtually every way. As fuel prices help shift priorities to smaller, more efficient vehicles, it’s important to remember that full-size sport-utilities will become more useful than ever simply because no other vehicle can do so much with so many people. Ford is right on target with its family adventure concept, and the Ford Expedition is the best vehicle for family vacation travel on the American road.
